Grief and Loss

Experiencing Grief

Grief and loss have a way of sneaking up on us when we least expect it. Recently, I found myself overwhelmed by an unexpected loss, and today I want to share with all of you how grief can manifest in ways we never imagined.

Thirteen years ago, a furry bundle named Scruffy entered our lives. Although he is my daughter's dog, his love extended to each and every one of us. Scruffy blessed our family with countless playful moments, from cuddles and ball games to bike rides and beach swims.

Every time I walked through the door, Scruffy would greet me with unmatched enthusiasm. He had a unique way of making me feel like the most important person in the world. It became a ritual for my daughter to keep us outside until Scruffy calmed down, not wanting him to wake the children with his excited chatter of his family’s stories. Those greetings became a cherished part of my visits, as Scruffy's genuine love made me feel truly special. But the truth is, he made everyone feel that way.

Losing Scruffy has been a devastating blow. It's a reminder that grief doesn't discriminate it touches us deeply, whether it's the loss of a human loved one or a beloved pet. It's crucial to acknowledge and process these emotions, even when they catch us off guard. That's why I'm sharing my experience today, with the hope that it may help others understand the importance of reaching out during times of loss.

Sharing our grief is a vital step towards healing. Whether it's leaning on friends and family or seeking support from a professional counsellor, talking about our feelings can offer solace and comfort. It's okay to cry, to feel the weight of our loss, because in doing so, we grant ourselves permission to heal.

I share this story in loving memory of Scruffy, hoping that it can provide some comfort or support to those who are experiencing their own losses. Remember, you're not alone. If you find yourself navigating the turbulent waters of grief, don't hesitate to reach out. As a counsellor who understands I am ready to listen.

Let's honour our loved ones by embracing the healing power of sharing our grief. Together, we can find strength, solace, and a path forward.
